NEW HAVEN, Conn. — A jury found a New Haven man guilty on Wednesday of killing another New Haven man during the summer of 2020, according to the state’s Division of Criminal Justice.
Prosecutors say the jury in New Haven Superior Court found Rashad Hardy, 49, guilty of murder and carrying a pistol without a permit. In addition to the murder conviction, Hardy was also convicted of criminal possession of a firearm in a separate proceeding tried before the court.
Evidence displayed at the trial revealed that Hardy shot Ricky Newton, 36, on Rosette Street in New Haven just before 5 p.m. on July 10, 2020. Newtown was taken to the hospital. There, he was pronounced dead from his wounds, prosecutors say.
While executing an unrelated search warrant, Maryland authorities found Hardy living in a group home and took him to custody on July 24, 2020, according to prosecutors. Hardy was then extradited to Connecticut.
Hardy will be sentenced in New Haven Superior Court on Nov. 25, 2024.
State’s Attorney John Doyle, Jr. commends the New Haven Police Department for its investigative efforts. He also thanks the State of Connecticut Division of Scientific Services and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for their analysis and testimony.
