WESTPORT, Conn. — Another person has been charged in the carjacking of an Aston Martin from a Westport home garage. The Sept. 17 theft of the high-end Aston Martin sports car was recorded by a home security camera.
Westport detectives, with the assistance of Waterbury Police, arrested 22-year-old Garrett Gibbs Friday following what they termed "an intense investigation."
Gibbs, a Waterbury resident, was charged with Home Invasion, Burglary, Robbery by Carjacking, Robbery, Assault, Larceny, and Conspiracy to Commit Larceny. He is currently being held at the Westport Police Department on a court-ordered $500,000.00 bond and has been assigned a court date of Oct. 16 at Stamford Superior Court.
Two others were previously charged in connection to the case: Derrick McGill, 29, of Berlin, was arrested by the Bridgeport Auto Theft Task Force, and an unidentified 16-year-old from Waterbury were both arrested two days after the carjacking. Westport Police said on Friday they are still working on the case and anticipate additional arrests.
The theft garnered widespread attention when the home security video became public, showing the owner being pulled from the sportscar by masked men right after parking in his garage. Police believe the suspects followed the victim home.
Many residents voiced concerns about a perceived increase in auto thefts at a community meeting held after the incident. Police said the number of stolen vehicles so far in 2023 was on par with last year, although more thefts were occurring in daylight instead of the overnight hours.
Police recovered the stolen 2021 Aston Martin DBS Super Leggera at a home in Berlin along with two BMWs and a Porsche, all stolen. One of the BMWs was stolen out of Westport and used during the carjacking, police said.
The other BMW was stolen out of Ridgefield and the Porsche was stolen out of Rhode Island, according to police.
