WEST HAVEN, Conn. — A West Haven police officer was attacked on Saturday afternoon, according to a release from the West Haven Police Department.
Police said around 1:58 p.m., a West Haven police officer was driving his marked patrol car in the area of Meloy Road and Route 1 when a Nissan Rogue pulled alongside him and attempted to run him off the road.
The officer reported the encounter to dispatch and said that the individual was trying to strike his police car, according to police. The officer continued southbound on Meloy Road and then onto Saw Mill Road on his way back to the police department while radioing in updates.
Police said that as additional units began to assist the officer, and one marked patrol car was stopped at the red light on Greta Street by Saw Mill Road.
“The operator of the suspect vehicle then took a sharp left turn and deliberately crashed into a stopped and occupied police vehicle,” the release said.
According to police, multiple units then converged to the location of the crash and were able to apprehend the suspect. The department’s Detective Division has assumed the investigation, which is being investigated as a “deliberate attack on our law enforcement officers,” the release said.
More information will be released as the investigation continues, according to police.
