Wolcott man pleads guilty to assaulting police during Jan. 6 riots

More than 1,488 people have been charged for crimes related to the Jan. 6 riots, officials said.

WASHINGTON — A Wolcott man has pleaded guilty to charges that stemmed from attacking police officers during the January 6 riots at the U.S. Capitol.

Richard Markey, 38, pleaded guilty Monday to a felony charge of assaulting, resisting or impeding officers with a deadly or dangerous weapon.

Court documents revealed Markey traveled from his Connecticut home to Washington D.C. on Jan. 5, 2021, and was one of the thousands of rioters who stormed the Capitol the next day.

Markey ended up at the Lower West Terrace Tunnel, where he tried to climb on top of other rioters in order to get to the police line that was defending the tunnel, court documents state. Markey then assaulted police with a baton and with his fists, at one point hitting and pulling on a police shield two officers were holding, according to court documents.

Markey balanced himself on top of the mob, grabbed the police shield again, and then kicked the shield multiple times. Police tried to stop Markey with a pole, but Markey took the pole and pointed it at officers, screaming, "Oath breaker!" as well as vulgar language.

Markey continued to hit the shield with the pole until the pole broke. He then continued to assault and yell at police, according to court documents.

Markey was arrested by the FBI on July 17, 2023. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Dec. 6, 2024.

More than 1,488 people have been charged for crimes related to the Jan. 6 riots, officials said.
