NEW HARTFORD, Conn. — A woman was killed in New Hartford this weekend and her husband has been arrested following a "violent struggle" and shooting, according to state police.

At around 11:28 a.m. Saturday, troopers in North Canaan received a 911 call reporting a disturbance at a home on Richards Road in New Hartford.

The caller said they had heard “horrible screaming” and “five gunshots” in the area. The caller, who lives on Richards Road, said they drove to the area and saw a woman lying in the driveway of a home a few doors down, court documents said.

Responding troopers found a woman lying in the driveway with a gunshot wound to the head. They identified her as Christine Vazquez.

The caller told police that Vazquez had recently been married to Efrain Vazquez.

Investigators said a man, later identified as Efrain Vazquez, 50, was seen exiting the home. After encountering the troopers outside, he returned inside and did not respond to the commands from the police.

A short time later, officers at the scene found Efrain Vazquez on the ground. Police said he appeared to be lethargic and experiencing a medical issue. He was taken to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment.

When troopers checked the inside of the home, they said they found signs consistent with a violent struggle, including what appeared to be blood on the walls of a bathroom. A red substance with the appearance of blood was found on clothing worn by Efrain Vazquez.

Police also found a rifle and a revolver inside the home. The revolver had a blood-like substance on it, the arrest warrant said.

On Sunday, after being discharged from treatment at the medical facility, Efrain Vazquez was arrested and charged with murder, tampering with physical evidence, criminal possession of a firearm, and unlawful discharge of a firearm.

Vazquez is being held on a $3,000,000 bond. He appeared before a judge on Monday at Torrington Superior Court.

According to the arrest warrant, Efrain Vazquez has a history of minor non-violent domestic-related issues with a previous girlfriend. The arrest warrant does not provide any information on a possible motive for the alleged crimes.
