STORRS, Conn. — The University of Connecticut issued a statement Tuesday night apologizing for a class assignment that made mention of the shooter at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
A spokesperson for the university said the assignment in question had students attempt to determine an account holder’s password as part of a hypothetical law enforcement investigation. The name of the Sandy Hook shooter was used as the hypothetical account holder, “although nothing else in the scenario reflected his actions before or on Dec. 14, 2012.”

A letter from Kazem Kazerounian, the dean of the College of Engineering, was sent to the students in which he apologized for the assignment.
“Some students reported to the university that they were understandably troubled and dismayed by this, noting that the assignment’s use of that specific name was needless and the educational value of the scenario was not contingent on it,” he said. “Please accept my deepest apologies on behalf of the College of Engineering and the course’s instructors, who have reached out to its students to express their regret for this error in judgment and immediately changed the content.”
He also apologized to the UConn students who hail from Newtown “and all those who were personally affected by the events on that terrible day.”
Twenty students and six teachers were killed in the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
