The infected person is a woman in her 60s from New Haven County. She has since recovered from the infection.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The first human case of West Nile Virus (WNV), an infection mosquitoes carry, has been confirmed in Connecticut, according to state health officials.

The Connecticut Department of Public Health said a woman in her 60s from New Haven County got sick the first week of August with WNV. She has since recovered. There were WNV antibodies found in her lab tests, health officials said.

Seven human cases of WNV infections were reported in Connecticut in 2023, according to health officials.

Around 176 mosquitoes trapped around Connecticut have tested positive for WNV this season as of Thursday.

Researchers encourage residents to take precautions to avoid being bitten by mosquitos and prevent human cases of disease from developing.

In the backyard, get rid of standing water, including in flower pots, tires, and bird baths. Using bug spray and keeping screens on windows and doors can also help. More information on preventing bug bites can be found here.
