U.S. News & World Report names Saint Francis Hospital one of the country's best regional hospitals

The national media company recognized Saint Francis as "high performing" for its care in seven specialties.

HARTFORD, Conn. — U.S. News & World Report has named Saint Francis Hospital among its best regional hospitals for 2024-2025, according to a release from the facility on Wednesday.

It is the 12th consecutive year that the hospital in Hartford has earned a spot on the list created by the American media company known for releasing a variety of rankings ranging from hospitals to cars along with consumer advice.

Saint Francis was also named by U.S. News & World Report as a “high-performing hospital” for its care in specialties including COPD, colon cancer surgery, heart failure, hip and knee replacement, leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma, and pneumonia.

Saint Francis' President Valerie Powell-Stafford said that the hospital is "incredibly proud" to be featured on the list of best regional hospitals once again.

“These prestigious awards we earned demonstrate the commitment and dedication of our physicians, nurses, clinical, and non-clinical teams in providing our patients and community with the highest quality care,” Powell-Stafford said, in the release. “We are honored to be a resource to so many and are committed to ensuring we provide the best care possible for each individual we have the privilege to serve throughout our community.”

According to the release, U.S. News & World Report evaluated nearly 5,000 hospitals across 15 specialties and 20 procedures and conditions. Only 11% of hospitals assessed earned a “Best Hospitals” ranking. Those who earned the recognition excelled at factors such as clinical outcomes, levels of nursing care, and patient experience.

The media company evaluated each hospital’s performance on objective measures, including risk-adjusted mortality rates, preventable complications, and level of care nursing, the release said. The rating methodology measures patient outcomes using data from millions of records provided by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

In its latest rankings, U.S. News & World Report factored in new data on care provided to patients with Medicare Advantage insurance and care provided to outpatients, which is close to double the number of patients included in its annual data analysis.

Since 1897, Saint Francis has served area residents. As a Level 1 Trauma Center, the facility features 617 beds and a major teaching hospital. The release said it is the largest Catholic hospital in New England.
