WESTPORT, Conn — A body was recovered on Monday evening and the search was suspended for the other victim after two people went missing and three were rescued when a boat sunk near Cockenoe Island on Sunday, Westport police said.
On Monday, at around 4:30 a.m., Westport Police Marine Division was notified of a body in the water 3 miles northeast of the sunken boat. Bridgeport Fire recovered the body.
The body was identified as 38-year-old Juan Gabriel Valle Pineda of Spring Valley, New York.
Westport police suspended the search for the second victim at around 9 p.m.
On Sunday at around 4:09 p.m., Westport police were informed of a boating accident and two "possible" missing people. A boater traveling near Cockenoe Island found a man standing on a buoy. Another man and a woman were also rescued from the water, according to police.
All three people were taken to Norwalk Marina and then to the hospital for evaluation.
Police said a translator was requested and once officers were able to speak with the people involved, they learned that there were five people on a small boat that sank and everyone went into the water.
Westport Police Marine Division, with the assistance of the US Coast Guard, Norwalk Police Marine Division, Fairfield Police Marine Division, and Suffolk County Air Unit searched the waters in an attempt to locate the vessel that the individuals were on and the two missing people.
