Applying for FEMA funding: Here's what to know

Lamont announced on Friday that federal funding will be available for residents impacted by August's storms in Fairfield, Litchfield and New Haven counties.

CONNECTICUT, USA — Connecticut and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security provided information on applying for federal disaster funding Tuesday after the impact of August's storms on state residents.

After President Joe Biden approved a major disaster declaration of a federal emergency for parts of Connecticut, Gov. Ned Lamont announced on Friday that federal funding will be available for affected homeowners and renters in Fairfield, Litchfield and New Haven counties.

The storms on Aug. 18-19 brought flooding, landslides and mudslides, devastating parts of the state.

According to Lamont's office, assistance includes "grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover from the effects of the disaster," and that Biden has "also authorized funding for hazard mitigation measures to be implemented statewide."

Those looking to apply can visit DisasterAssistance.gov., download the FEMA App for mobile devices or call 1-800-621-3362, officials said. The phone line is open 7 a.m. to 12 a.m. ET every day, with multiple language services available. Anyone using a video relay, captioned telephone or other service can give FEMA their number for that service.

Officials listed the following that residents will need to provide:

  • Your contact information.
  • Your address at the time of the disaster and the address where you are now staying.
  • Your Social Security number.
  • A general list of damage and losses.
  • Banking information if you choose direct deposit.
  • If insured, the policy number or the agent and/or the company name.

Local and federal officials are asking residents with homeowners, renters or flood insurance to file a claim as soon as possible.

Individuals whose policies do not cover all disaster expenses may be eligible for federal assistance, officials said.
