SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Big Y launched its annual Sack Hunger holiday campaign, aiming to provide meals to local food banks across Massachusetts and Connecticut.

The initiative supports four major food banks: The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts, Worcester County Food Bank, Greater Boston Food Bank and Connecticut Food Share. Together, these organizations help food pantries, soup kitchens, senior food programs and other local agencies serving families in need.

For a $5 donation, customers can contribute to the Sack Hunger campaign at Big Y’s supermarkets, Table & Vine Fine Wines and Liquors, or online by clicking here. Every $5 donation provides 10 meals for those facing hunger. The campaign runs through Dec. 11.

In addition to the register donations, Big Y is expanding its efforts this year by donating a portion of proceeds from various departments. From Nov. 14-20, a portion of sales from the produce and floral departments will benefit the campaign. From Nov. 29 to Dec. 4, proceeds from Big Y’s private label products will support Sack Hunger. Between Dec. 5-11, a portion of meat department sales will also be donated to the cause.

“Food insecurity continues to challenge our communities,” said Michael P. D’Amour, president and CEO of Big Y. “Our Sack Hunger program provides a meaningful way to give back and ensure that local food banks have the resources to support those in need. We are grateful for the generosity of our customers and employees who make this possible.”

Big Y’s Sack Hunger program has provided millions of meals over the past 13 years, with donations of fresh produce, meat, bakery items, dairy, frozen foods and grocery items contributing to local food banks year-round.
