Connecticut AG William Tong voted next president of the National Association of Attorneys General

All U.S. attorneys general, both Democrat and Republican, unanimously elected Tong to the position, where he’ll serve on a bipartisan four-person leadership team.

HARTFORD, Conn. — Connecticut Attorney General William Tong has been unanimously elected as the next president of the National Association of Attorneys General.

Tong’s office announced the news in a release on Wednesday.

The unanimous vote included all attorneys general in the United States, including both Republicans and Democrats. Tong will serve as part of a bipartisan leadership team consisting of four people.

In the release, Tong said he is honored by the bipartisan show of support from attorneys general across the country and across the aisle. He discussed what it means for the state.

“From Big Tech to Big Pharma, this role ensures Connecticut will be front and center in leading the strategy and outcome for all of the major multistate legal actions and efforts,” Tong said. “Our federal government has struggled for so long to deliver on its basic responsibilities. It falls to the states – to attorneys general – to protect American families.”

Tong said he takes his leadership role in this strong, bipartisan state coalition extremely seriously.

The release from Tong’s office notes that his election as president-elect of NAAG is a reflection on his leadership on major multistate cases and investigations in the United States.

In the past, Tong has worked to hold the addiction industry accountable for the opioid crisis and attempted to restore fair competition in the generic drug industry. 

He also has challenged big tech dominance, made sure corporations safeguard and respected the personal information of citizens, addressed the health and environmental consequences of chemical and plastics pollution and held social media giants responsible for the harm they’ve caused to youths.
