CONNECTICUT, USA — It’s been a little more than a week since Israel declared war on Hamas after it infiltrated the Israel border. A war that is hitting home here in Connecticut, bringing state and local leaders along with community members standing in solidarity with Israel.
“I have no doubt that so many people in this room have your own experiences, you know someone that has been lost. You have family members in Israel now, terrified,” said New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker.
State leaders emphasized their commitment to Israel’s defense.
“I can tell you that there is a commitment to put together the supplemental appropriations package which will provide Israel with what it needs to be able to carry on the battle to defeat Hamas,” Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro said.
While praying for a path of peace, leaders also called for the safety of Palestinians.
“Just as we grieve the loss of Israeli citizens, we also grieve the loss of innocent Palestinian civilians,” said Elicker.
On the other side of this war are Palestinian civilians.
“I think it’s time that our story gets told to people,” said Faisal Saleh.
Faisal Saleh owns the Palestine Museum in Woodbridge, one of the only museums dedicated to Palestinian art and culture. On Sunday, it became a place to learn more about the Palestine and Israel conflict history.
“The event that we had today is really to try to put things in perspective for people. The situation did not start seven days ago. It started 75 years ago,” said Saleh.
Pressure mounts from both sides of the conflict.
“As Israeli’s conflict with Hamas escalates and the ground war appears imminent, it is my hope that innocent Palestinian civilians from violence and suffering,” said Elicker.
The overall message is still one of hope and peace.
“May we rise from this tragedy stronger for the sake of all of our futures,”
Senator Richard Blumenthal also said that beginning Monday, the Armed Services Committee will be putting together a package for specific aid measures for Israel.
