HARTFORD, Conn. — President-elect Donald Trump announced plans to make good on his promise to deport the millions of undocumented immigrants living in the U.S. soon after he is sworn into office in January.
Now, Connecticut state leaders are vowing to fight back and protect the 100,000 undocumented immigrants currently living in the Nutmeg State.
“I don't think anybody knows when and how and where they're gonna hit us,” Attorney General William Tong said at a rally in Hartford on Nov. 18. “We know they're coming and we know that [immigration] is at the top of their list.”
Tong said he is meeting with leaders in other Democrat-run states to come up with a plan before the new administration officially takes over in the new year.
He joined dozens of immigrants and allies on the front steps of the State Capitol, pledging to keep Connecticut a state that is welcoming to immigrants.
Tong said it’s going to be a battle but one that he’s ready to take on.
“The rubber is going to meet the road when your kid comes home and says that my best friend for kid of my soccer team doesn't have any parents tonight because ICE picked up his parents and they're in a detention facility outside of Connecticut,” Tong said.
He said that state attorneys generals from across the country are getting together to draft contingency plans, including using the legal system to block deportation orders.
Joining Tong and activists Monday were Hartford Mayor Arunan Arulampalam, New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker, Stamford Mayor Caroline Simmons and Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling, all of whom pledged solidarity with undocumented immigrants living in their cities.
