BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — A six-year-old died from their injuries after a "brutal" domestic violence assault in Bridgeport, according to the city's police department Wednesday.
Police arrested Abdulrahim Sulaiman, 33, on Sept. 25 on charges of three counts of Criminal Attempt at Murder, three counts of Assault in the First Degree, two counts of Risk of Injury to a Minor and Criminal Possession of a Firearm.
Following the six-year-old's death, police said Wednesday that they have now upgraded Sulaiman's charges to include Murder with Special Circumstances.
In a statement from the Bridgeport Police Department, police said of the child that their "thoughts and prayers are with his entire family and friends."
On Sept. 25 at 10 a.m., police said they responded to an apartment on Main Street for the reported assault.
Concerned individuals at the apartment alerted officers to a man who was walking away from the area.
Police detained the man, identified as Sulaiman, as they entered the apartment building and found two children, ages six and four, along with their mother with life-threatening injuries as a result of "blunt force trauma."
Court documents allege that the mother told police that Sulaiman hit them with a bat. The documents said that neighbors helped pull the children to safety, and that a city camera spotted Sulaiman throwing a bloody bat out of a window and then jumping out headfirst into a dumpster before being apprehended.
Investigators learned that Sulaiman attacked the three individuals in a domestic assault, and that all involved knew each other.
A judge set Sulaiman's bond to $10 million and ordered him to wear ankle bracelets, referencing his criminal history and other allegations of threats made towards neighbors in the apartment building he lives in.
Assistant State’s Attorney Craig Nowak said Sulaiman is facing Connecticut State Police charges of Assault on a Peace Officer and Disorderly Conduct after allegations of him slapping and spitting on court marshals moments before appearing in court.
Anyone with additional information is asked by police to contact the case officer, Det. Jeff Holtz, at 203-581-5243. The Bridgeport Police Tips Line is also available at 203-576-TIPS.
