BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — During what has been an up and down academic year, the parents of Bridgeport students will soon have an opportunity to have their questions and concerns answered.

Bridgeport Public Schools announced Thursday that it is launching a series of virtual and in-person public forums. The first will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 16 at 3 p.m.

The forum will be broadcast live on the district’s Facebook page, which can be accessed here. It is not clear if the Dec. 16 forum will be accessible in-person.

The district said that those who participate in the forums will be able to directly engage with and have questions answered by Acting Superintendent Dr. Royce Avery. Avery was appointed on Nov. 12 to lead the district after then-Superintendent Dr. Carmela Levy-David took a leave of absence earlier that month.

Levy-David was widely criticized for her leadership, and an October survey that polled Bridgeport educators revealed that 97% of the nearly 600 respondents said they had no confidence in Levy-David’s ability to manage the school system effectively.

In his interim position, Avery is attempting to turn the page. The forums will allow him to hear feedback directly from parents, community members and other district stakeholders.

“BPS is committed to transparency, collaboration and engaging stakeholders in shaping the future of education,” the district said in a release Thursday. “These forums provide an opportunity for parents, teachers, students and community members to connect with district leadership, share their concerns and offer input on key topics.”

The rest of the release echoed that statement, saying that participants will be able to share feedback, ask questions and engage in meaningful discussions with district representatives.

The Dec. 16 forum will be available on Facebook live at the aforementioned link. It is unclear when a second forum will take place.
