BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — Bridgeport Public Schools said the district is ready for the return of students and staff Monday after social media threats of harm prompted the schools to be closed Friday.
According to Dr. Carmela Levy-David, BPS superintendent, the district has taken steps to ensure the "safety and wellbeing" of all those returning to the school.
The schools will see a "strong police presence" and reinforced existing safety protocols that include emergency response plans and communication procedures involving the city's emergency operations center and police department, BPS said.
Counseling and support services will also be available for any students or staff impacted by the situation involving the threats.
"We are confident that these measures will provide a safe and secure environment for our students to return to their educational activities," said Levy-David. "Our top priority is the safety and well-being of our students and staff, and we will continue to monitor the situation closely and keep everyone informed of any updates."
Bridgeport police arrested a 13-year-old suspect on Sept. 18 in an investigation into the threats. The teen is facing a charge of threatening in the first degree.
Police said there is no danger to the school district at this time.
