'Sad to see': Fire rips through 'historic' Highland Golf Club in Shelton

The golf club had been gearing up to celebrate 125 years.

SHELTON, Conn. — The Highland Golf Club in Shelton was destroyed in a fire late Friday night, leaving nothing but the stone fireplace, charred propane tanks and the plot of land where the 125-year-old building once stood.

Firefighters were called to the golf course on Wooster Street just before 11:30 p.m. Friday for a report of a "well-involved" structure fire.

No one was at the golf club when firefighters responded, officials said. No injuries to civilians or firefighters were reported.

Fire crews had to move propane tanks that were exposed to the fire, and some of the embers from the fire caused some small brush fires in the area, according to Shelton Fire Chief Francis Jones.

"The greatest challenge was a wind-driven fire, well-advanced fire and the propane tanks exposed to the fire," Jones said.

Crews will remain at the scene Saturday to monitor hotspots, as dry conditions and high winds continue into the weekend.

Jones added that it was "sad to see that such a nice, historic structure" was destroyed by fire, as the golf club was getting ready to celebrate 125 years.

The Fire Marshal's Office and Shelton police and investigating the cause of the fire.
