NORWALK, Conn. — A harbor seal named Polly died after a decline in health, the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk said Thursday.
According to the aquarium, 37-year-old Polly died on Wednesday following a "recent decline in her health" as members of their Animal Husbandry team worked with both veterinarians and world leaders of harbor seal care to "support her and keep her comfortable."
Polly surpassed the 25-year average life expectancy of harbor seals, the aquarium said, noting that this was the first harbor seal death since 33-year-old Ariel and 37-year-old Tillie in late 2023.
All harbor seals in the aquarium, except for one-year-old Sono, are of an older age, averaging 32 years old, according to the aquarium.
The aquarium said in a release that Polly had been a member of their seal population since 1990 and was recognized by a heart-shaped birthmark on her chest.
Polly was described by the aquarium as being "sassy" and having a "curious personality," which many trainers got to know as they began their careers, according to the release.
One of the aquarium's trainers, Marisa Miloro, said, "I feel grateful and lucky that Polly chose me to be her trainer for seven years - we had a very special connection. I will always remember her and carry with me the lessons she taught me early in my career."
Rachel Stein, the director of Animal Husbandry, said, "It is always difficult when we lose an animal, and Polly was so special, both to our staff and to our guests. She had such a wonderful, sweet personality, even in her older age. She touched the hearts of so many people during her time, and her presence will be deeply missed."
Aquarium veterinarian Dr. Charles Duffy, who worked with Polly for "over 20 years," said "I am greatly saddened by this loss."
"She was a beautiful seal with an enduring personality," Duffy said. "Her age is a testament to the excellent care she received throughout her life."
