NEWTOWN, Conn. — Police officers in Newtown are investigating a threat made Thursday morning toward Sandy Hook Elementary School, officials said.
The threatening message from a “third party” was received around 9:15 a.m. Newtown police officers responded to the school as staff there followed “appropriate safety precautions.”
“Newtown Police quickly determined that all students and staff were safe and that the threat was not credible,” police said in a release. “But instead was similar to the ‘swatting’ incidents we often investigate.”
Officials said they found no credible threat to any Newtown schools at this time and that all students and staff are safe.
“Out of an abundance of caution, Newtown Police performed a thorough check of the school and area surrounding the school to ensure that nothing suspicious or out of the ordinary had occurred,” police said.
The police department is investigating with the help of its partners in federal law enforcement.
Sandy Hook Elementary School is the site of a mass shooting on Dec. 14, 2012, where 20 children and six adults were killed.
