FAIRFIELD, Conn. — As Hurricane Milton barrels into the west coast of Florida and threatens the well-being of thousands of people, Save the Children is prepared to support the children and families who are hit hardest by the storm.
The global humanitarian organization based in Fairfield has pre-positioned supplies ahead of Hurricane Milton and is equipped to deliver critical, child-focused resources to children and families who are most affected. These supplies include diapers, wipes, hygiene kits and more.
Save the Children is also prepared to help restore childcare and early learning centers damaged by the storm. Furthermore, the organization’s psychosocial team is ready to assist long-term recovery efforts by supporting the mental health needs of children and caregivers.
David Niersbach, head of Save the Children’s Emergency Response and Recovery Team, said children are always among the most vulnerable when disaster strikes.
“Our thoughts and hearts go out to kids and families in the pathway of this dangerous storm,” Niersbach said. “Save the Children is prepared to meet kids’ immediate and long-term recovery needs in the wake of Hurricane Milton, including helping them return to learning and getting the mental health supports to cope and heal.”
Save the Children launched the Gulf Coast Resilience Network to expedite and strengthen childcare support after hurricanes and emergencies. The group is a collaboration of childcare networks in five hurricane prone states, including Florida.
The Fairfield organization provides network support such as childcare emergency preparedness training, mental health supports for children and parents and guidance and training to allow childcare centers access to federal disaster aid funding more rapidly.
Save the Children has been supporting the needs of children and families impacted by U.S. hurricanes since 2005 and has helped provide relief following Hurricanes Irma, Michael, Ian, Idalia, Debby, Beryl and Helene in Florida.
