BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — A woman was arrested on Tuesday in connection to the death of her 4-week-old granddaughter, according to Bridgeport police.
The investigation began when officers responded in February 2021 to a report of an infant child not breathing in the area of Bronx Ave. The baby girl was taken by her uncle to a local hospital where she later died at only 4 weeks old, police said.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined that the manner of the baby's death was a homicide and that it was caused by an ingestion of drugs including Fentanyl and Para-Fluorofentanyl, according to police.
After the police detective bureau opened a criminal investigation, officers determined that 61-year-old Eleanor Herman of Bridgeport, the baby's maternal grandmother, was her caregiver for more than three hours leading up to her death.
Herman, who has a history of heroin abuse and was living with her granddaughter at the time of her death, was arrested on charges of manslaughter in the second degree and risk of injury to a child. Her bond is set at $250,000 and she is expected to appear in Bridgeport Superior Court on Wednesday.
