Woman critically injured in Bridgeport after being shot while traveling in car: Police

The woman is expected to survive after being shot in the face and neck, police said.

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — A woman is in critical condition after being shot in the face and neck early morning Sunday, according to the city's police department.

Officers arrived at 12:35 a.m. to Holly Street after receiving a report of a person who was shot, police said.

While no crime scene was found, police learned that a 28-year-old woman had driven herself to the hospital with injuries from a shooting. She is currently in critical condition but is expected to survive, police said.

Police said the woman told officers at the hospital that she was traveling in her car on Holly Street when she was shot at by someone in a dark colored vehicle that was also in motion.

The Bridgeport Police Department Detective Bureau is leading the investigation. Anyone with information is asked by police to contact Det. Matthew Goncalves, the case officer, at 203-581-5240 or the department's tip line at 203-576-TIPS.

The incident was one of several shootings that happened Saturday evening into Sunday morning, Police said two that happened in the city's westside do not appear to be related to the one on Holly Street.

According to police, additional shootings from overnight include three men shot at the PT Barnum Housing community; one at building 6 at 8:10 p.m. Saturday, a second at building 17 at 10:50 p.m. Saturday, and a third at the basketball court at 2:30 a.m. Sunday, all of which involved non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said they also investigated a serious injury shooting on Ezra Street at 11:05 p.m. involving a man with a gunshot wound to the groin.

"We have had several individuals injured, and we are doing everything in our power to support them and their loved ones during this difficult time," Bridgeport Police Chief Roderick Porter said in a statement. "We want to assure the residents of Bridgeport that we are fully committed to finding those responsible for these senseless acts of violence."

Porter added that the police department has increased patrols in the areas that were affected and are "working around the clock to gather information and follow up on leads," as well as as "actively investigating witnesses and reviewing all available evidence."
