Dozens displaced after apartment fire in Avon

Two firefighters were injured during the fire, officials said.

AVON, Conn — Dozens of people have been displaced after a fire at an apartment complex on Sunday evening.

The fire started on the third-floor balcony area of a unit in building 44 at the Avon Place Apartments on Avonwood Road. The fire spread up and over the balcony, fire officials said.

A witness said that his neighbor smelled the smoke and pulled the fire alarm.

The fire was in a narrow void between the third floor and roof deck, which made it difficult for firefighters to attack the flames, fire officials said.

Two firefighters were injured during the fire, officials said.

A total of 58 units were damaged, displacing dozens of residents.

Firefighters are investigating the cause of the fire.

On Monday evening, the town of Avon announced a gift card drive for the families impacted by the fire, asking those interested in participating to donate "essentials such as food, clothing, medicines, personal care items and household goods from local stores." Information regarding the drive can be found here.
