BRISTOL, Conn. — A woman and a pet dog perished in a house fire in Bristol early Thursday morning, officials said.
The fire broke out at a home on Pequabuck Street around 9:15 a.m. Deputy Fire Chief Dave Butkus said a neighbor alerted authorities of a heavy structure fire and that a victim was probably inside.
When firefighters arrived, they found a portion of the home engulfed in flames – the fire was mostly in the kitchen and main living areas, Butkus said.
Elizabeth Perera, 65, was pulled from the home as well as a dog. Both died from their injuries. The fire was extinguished about 20 minutes after firefighters arrived.
Butkus said it was not immediately clear whether another person lived in the home. He said the victim’s brother said it was just her.
Bristol Mayor Jeff Caggiano said the home was in a very new development in town – probably fewer than 2 years old.
“It’s a tragic event,” he said. “These are very difficult times for the families. My condolences go out to the families.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
