ROCKY HILL, Conn. — A Connecticut correction officer pleaded guilty to fraudulently receiving over $86,000 in workers' compensation and transportation benefits, the state Division of Criminal Justice said Tuesday.
According to the DCJ, Matthew Hubbard, 56, of Agawam, Mass., pleaded guilty on April 26 to three counts of larceny in the fourth degree and was sentenced to a total of 1,092 days, or nearly three years, in prison, with two years of probation "with special conditions."

Hubbard received compensation and medical benefits paid by the state after he was injured while employed with the State of Connecticut Department of Correction and "placed on temporary total disability," the DCJ said with details from his arrest warrant.
Despite those under disability being considered unable to work, Hubbard was recertified as a reserve Agawam police officer and "engaged in real estate transactions as an agent," while still receiving the benefits, according to the DCJ.
The DCJ said that those who are placed on a period of disability are required to let their employer know of medical improvements, as well as to communicate if they are receiving any employment income other than what they are receiving through their benefits.
The Workers' Compensation Fraud Control Unit of the Office of the Chief State's Attorney in Rocky Hill prosecuted the case, the DCJ said. The restitution to be paid will be decided by the workers' compensation commissioner.
