Pedestrian killed on Berlin Turnpike: Newington police

The crash happened on the Berlin Turnpike near Wren Kitchen.

NEWINGTON, Conn. — The Berlin Turnpike reopened nearly four hours after police in Newington said a driver hit a pedestrian, who died from her injuries. 

The crash happened around 6:15 p.m. Thursday, in the southbound lanes of Route 15 near Wren Kitchen.

The pedestrian was identified as Katelyn Burke, 27, of Wethersfield, The driver stayed on the scene and showed identification, police said.

The Mid-State Accident Reconstruction Squad is investigating the crash, and police closed the southbound lanes to traffic between Kitts Lane and Main Street at the time.

The southbound lanes remained closed more than three hours after the crash occurred and finally reopened sometime before 10 p.m. Thursday. 

Newington police ask that anyone who witnessed the crash call Officer Cappiello at 860-594-6317.

This is at least the fourth crash involving a pedestrian statewide this month. 

Last year, pedestrian deaths nationwide hit a record high of 41 fatalities.
