HARTLAND, Connecticut — The Metropolitan District, or MDC, will test its flood warning notification sirens at the Goodwin Dam twice on Oct. 29.

The sirens are located at the Goodwin Dam Hydroelectric Powerhouse in West Hartland, adjacent to the Grange Hall in the Riverton section of Barkhamsted. The routine testing and public sounding will occur next Tuesday at 2 p.m. and again at 7 p.m.

MDC says the tests will affect the communities of West Hartland, Colebrook, Riverton and parts of Barkhamsted. Each test will begin with a voice message broadcast through the warning notification sound system.

The broadcast will say, “The following warning tones are a test of the Goodwin Dam to Riverton Evacuation Siren System. In the event of an emergency situation at the Goodwin Dam, the following alarm tone would be sounded. This is only a test. This is only a test.”

According to MDC, several soundings may be needed to fully exercise the system. Each test should last no longer than five minutes.

At the end of the test, the broadcast will say, “This announcement concludes the testing of the Goodwin Dam to Riverton Evacuation Siren System. This was only a test. This was only a test.”

MDC says it takes its responsibility for the safety and well-being of its customers very seriously and regrets any inconvenience that the noise may cause residents during the testing period.

The tests are part of the MDC’s Goodwin Dam Emergency Action Plan and are mandated by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for all hydroelectric power facilities in the United States. MDC assures residents that the testing has been fully coordinated with local emergency response agency officials. Questions pertaining to local emergency preparedness agency evacuation plans should be directed to local police or fire departments.

MDC is a nonprofit municipal corporation that was chartered in 1929 by the state General Assembly. It provides water, wastewater treatment and other resources and services to its member municipalities.

Those communities include Bloomfield, East Hartford, Hartford, Newington, Rocky Hill, West Hartford, Wethersfield and Windsor. MDC also supplies treated water to parts of Glastonbury, South Windsor, Farmington, East Granby and Portland.
