HARTFORD, Conn. — A candlelight vigil was held in Hartford Friday to remember fallen Police Det. Bobby Garten.
One year ago, to the date, Garten died in the line of duty in downtown Hartford.
Dozens of people gathered in front of The High Street Police Station to honor and remember the son, brother, friend and officer that had an impact on them all.
They lit candles, watched a video of old photos in his memory and let a balloon go into the sky with a blue light. His fellow officers, friends and family spoke how the impact he had on the Hartford force, his memory and his legacy.
Bobby’s mother Debbie talked about what she misses about her son.
"His laughter, smile, kindness and unwavering spirit will always be in our hearts," she said.
Debbie went on reminiscing about when Bobby was a Sea Cadet. She said his commander taught a lesson: to always say goodbyes with heartfelt love and a hug.
"Please take a moment each day to call your loved one. It only takes a minute, and I am so blessed to have shared those precious moments with Bobby," she said.
On Saturday, Garten will be honored during the 12th Annual Ride To Remember, which is a bike ride from Springfield to Hartford and back. It’s a ride to honor fallen first responders, and Bobby’s parents are participating.
