HARTFORD, Conn. — Trick-or-treat season is here and The Village for Families and Children in Hartford held its annual trunk-or-treat event on Thursday, offering more than just candy to some children in need.
“I look forward to this every year. I can’t wait for the lights to go down so it can get a little more scary,” said Lovie Brown.
Lovie Brown has been taking his two boys to The Villages Trunk or Treat event for the last five years.
“I love all the costumes,” said his son, Lavi Brown.
Apart from The Village’s fatherhood engagement services, a program that was made to enhance father-child relationships, Brown said this event is a good way to get plugged into the village community.
“It gives us all types of resources. Not only do we get events like this, but there’s endless resources, it gives,” said Brown.
The organization has been putting on this trunk or treat event for the last six years. Not only do they give away fun treats.
They also gave away hundreds of children’s winter coats ahead of the cold seasons to come.
“In anticipation of this event, we go to different corporations, and we collect around 700 coats. All of them are given away for free,” said The Village President and CEO, Galo Rodriguez.
Officials said the purpose of this night is community engagement and for families it’s the perfect bonding activity.
“It feels amazing. Because of him right here,” said Lavonte Brown.
Officials said last year they had about 300 people come to this trunk or treat. This year, that number doubled with more than 600 people attending.
