HARTFORD, Conn. — A well-known brewery open since 1980 in Hartford is closing its doors at the end of March.
City Steam Brewery on Main Street took to social media "with humble gratitude and a heavy heart" to announce the closure Thursday, and sent thanks to its staff and customers throughout the years. Its last day of business will be March 31.
The decision came after struggling to bounce back after a burst sprinkler pipe flooded the establishment and kept it closed for four months, the restaurant said.
The search is on for who will take over the soon-to-be vacant building.
"We have had an incredible run, but it is now time to hand the reigns over to another talented and creative restaurateur. This iconic space at the head of the rejuvenated Pratt Street Historic district is ripe with opportunity," City Steam said.
City Steam's leaders are looking for a restauranteur to buy the business and bring a new concept to the capital city. Those interested can email jay@citysteambrewery.com
City Steam's craft beers will continue to brew, however, as the beers will still be distributed to grocery and liquor stores and bars and restaurants around Connecticut, the restaurant said.
The brewery opened as Brown Thomson and Co. in 1980 and became City Steam Brewery in 1997.
