HARTFORD, Conn. — CVS Health is planning to lay off over 400 workers at Hartford-based health insurer Aetna in December, according to a notice to the Hartford mayor and state Department of Labor Sunday.
The company will lay off a total of 416 employees over a 14-day period between Dec. 8-21, included in a planned 2,900 layoffs at CVS nationwide.
Terminations will include 93 employees working in-person at the Hartford facility and 323 who work remotely, CVS said in the letter.
The company said that they have notified all employees of the layoffs. The full notice can be found here.
The announcement comes as part of CVS' effort to increase cost savings by $2 billion over the next several years through "reducing expenses and investing in technologies to enhance how we work," according to CVS spokesperson Mike DeAngelis.
The company previously said that those technologies included more "artificial intelligence and automation."
"To achieve this goal and position for sustainable growth, we will reduce our workforce by less than 1 percent- approximately 2,900 colleagues across CVS Health," DeAngelis said. "Impacted positions are primarily corporate roles. The reductions will not impact front-line jobs in our stores, pharmacies, and distribution centers."
DeAngelis noted that the company made "extremely difficult" decisions on positions to eliminate, and intends to support workers with severance pay and outplacement services.
A spokesperson from the Hartford mayor's office said in a statement, "Mayor Arulampalam has personally kept in touch with representatives from CVS and has expressed the importance of keeping jobs in Hartford and preserving opportunities for economic growth in our Capital City."
In August, the company cut their profit expectations as Aetna President Brian Kane was let go after less than a year on the job. CVS' CEO Karen Lynch, who said leadership changes were necessary to move forward, has taken over with the chief financial officer.
