HARTFORD, Conn. — Thousands of families showed up for Hartford Public Schools' back-to-school event Tuesday to load up on an array of supplies for the upcoming school year.
Hartford Public Schools Superintendent Leslie Torres-Rodriguez said, “what this really should be about is a community coming together opening their doors for our young people.”
Torres-Rodriguez estimated that between parents and kids, an upwards of 5,000 people showed up to the event after registering online and then lining up to get into the stadium concourse.
Viviana Alvardo, the partnership and community manager from Hartford Public Schools, said students left the stadium with a lot of school supplies, made possible by 20 different sponsors from across Connecticut.
Alvarado said, “the backpacks are ready so you can take these backpacks straight to school. They have notebooks, pencils, crayons, markers, scissors, rulers, everything.”
Carting around her soon to be kindergartner and pre-k student, Crystal Thomas from Hartford said, “we got some book bags and some books," she then added, "I'm happy to get this, this helps a lot.”
"We are here to support them, and I think that’s the most important thing," added Torres-Rodriguez.
