EAST GRANBY, Conn. — Officials said a man was arrested for being a fugitive from justice Thursday when he showed up at a military base hoping to renew his military ID.
Connecticut State Police said they were called to the Connecticut Air National Guard security gate on Rainbow Road in East Granby because Air Guard Security Forces had a suspected fugitive from justice.
Police said John Culpepper, 55, of East Hartford, had gone to the Air National Guard base to ask about renewing his military ID. When Air Guard personnel checked their records, they showed Culpepper had an active felony arrest warrant out of Escambia County, Florida for violation of probation.
Troopers said this type of arrest warrant was extraditable and that Florida authorities confirmed with state police they would take custody of Culpepper from Connecticut.
Culpepper was positively identified by his driver's license, and he told Troopers that he was aware of his charges in Florida but believed the matter had been resolved.
Culpepper was arrested and transported to Troop H, where he was charged with Extradition Arrest.
Culpepper was held on a $250,000 bond and was scheduled to appear at Hartford Superior Court on Friday.
