Milner, the first popularly elected Black mayor in New England died on Friday. He served from 1981 to 1987.
He grew up not too far away from the school that now bears his name, raised only by his mother on welfare.
However, that didn’t stop Milner. He headed to New York University to study pharmacy. Shortly after his arrival, he heard Dr. Martin Luther King speak in New York City and that changed the direction of his life and lead to politics. He served in the General Assembly and later on was elected mayor.
