HARTFORD, Conn. — A jury found a Hartford basketball coach guilty of a sexual assault charge on Friday, according to the Division of Criminal Justice Monday.
Danny Lawhorn, 33, of Hartford was found guilty of sexual assault in the second degree, the DCJ said.
Citing evidence from the trial, the DCJ said that police went to a hotel on June 13, 2021 after they received a report about a minor sexual assault victim in the lobby.
The victim told police that she was an international basketball player for Lawhorn's Amateur Athletic Union team.
Lawhorn was the coach and director for the AAU girls basketball league and served as the girl's host family. The DCJ said he sent her a voice message "the evening before requesting assistance from her" and sexually assaulted her.
Hartford police arrested Lawhorn, who eventually admitted to the sexual assault and that he knew the victim was under 18 years old, the DCJ said.
He pleaded guilty to federal felony drug charges in U.S. District Court and was sentenced on Feb. 9. According to the DCJ, Lawhorn has two additional pending sexual assault cases.
