Hartford mayor kicks off transition of power to incoming leader

The city of Hartford will have a new mayor on Monday when Arunan Arulampalam takes the oath of office.

HARTFORD, Conn. — The transition of power in the capital city has begun.

The city of Hartford will have a new mayor on Monday when Arunan Arulampalam takes the oath of office. He will become the city’s 68th mayor in history.

Outgoing Mayor Luke Bronin spent his last days in office preparing for a smooth transition between the two. On Friday, he passed over all of his reports to Arulampalam.

“The transition process will continue. We have done a lot of work for then the mayor-elect and his team takes office,” Bronin said at City Hall.

Bronin took office in 2016, taking over the leadership of a city on the verge of bankruptcy.

He told FOX61 News in July that the capital city’s finances were worse than he thought.

“This city was bankrupt, it was not legally bankrupt, but it was financially bankrupt,” said Bronin. "It was facing [an] immediate shortfall, a cliff that was just dramatic a few years ahead.”

He proposed deep cuts, asked unions for concessions, and went to state lawmakers for help.

“It started with just being open and honest about the size of the problem, and not hiding it, and saying this is how big it is, and this is why it’s this big,” said Bronin in July.

With his two terms in office nearly behind him, Bronin is looking forward to the city’s future under new leadership.

Arulampalam will be sworn in next week.
