BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — A Hartford man was sentenced on Wednesday in Bridgeport to two years and nine months in federal prison for trafficking fentanyl and cocaine, according to a release from the U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut.

Luis Ivan Diaz, 26, will have his 33-month sentence followed by four years of supervised release, prosecutors said.

Court documents and statements revealed that Connecticut State Police secured an arrest warrant for Diaz after his DNA was found on a gun that was thrown from a vehicle during a state police pursuit on March 8, 2022. Prosecutors said that the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Hartford Task Force also identified Diaz as a fentanyl trafficker.

Diaz was located and arrested on state charges on Nov. 3, 2022, according to prosecutors, who said that at the time of his arrest, Diaz possessed around 35 grams of fentanyl, 23 grams of cocaine and five grams of crack cocaine.

On April 26, 2023, Diaz was charged by indictment, and on June 6, 2023, he was arrested in connection with a federal arrest warrant at the Hartford Superior Courthouse, where he had a case pending, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors noted that at the time of Diaz’s federal arrest, a search of his fanny pack turned out 40 grams of fentanyl and 18 grams of crack. Diaz has been detained since his federal arrest and pleaded guilty on Jan. 2 to possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and cocaine, prosecutors said.

The DEA’s Hartford Task Force includes law enforcement members from the DEA Hartford Resident Office, the state police and the Bristol, Hartford, East Hartford, Enfield, Manchester, New Britain, Rocky Hill, Wethersfield and Windsor Locks Police Departments.
