HARTFORD, Conn — All those nickels add up.

Officials said the “Nickel per Nip Environmental Fee” has resulted in more than $13.5 million in revenue for cities and towns around the state.

The program celebrated its three-year anniversary at the beginning of October.

Larry Cafero, the Executive Director and General Counsel of the Wine and Spirit Wholesalers said that the revenue for the latest reporting period – 4/1/24 through 9/30/24 – was $2.4M, an increase of approximately $77,000 over the same time period last year.

State cities and towns receive 5 cents for each nip sold within its borders which is used to help cities and towns provide for the collection and proper disposal of nips to combat littering.

Data from the Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of Connecticut shows that some cities and towns have used the funds to support recycling centers and litter-reduction initiatives.

“This program is working exactly as was intended when it became law in 2021,” said Cafero. “The revenue it generates is being used to clean up litter, and it’s even enhanced recycling efforts across the state."
