HARTFORD, Conn. — U.S. Marshals recovered a four-year-old from Connecticut who was kidnapped and brought to Puerto Rico by their biological mother, according to a release Tuesday.
On Oct. 10, the District of Hartford requested assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service Puerto Rico Violent Offenders Task Force, or PRVOTF, about a mother who abducted their biological child.
The child had been relocated for their safety after the mother exposed them to "dangerous altercations" with the biological father, U.S. Marshals said.
The mother was then arrested for risk of injury to a minor and reckless endangerment in the second degree. U.S. Marshals said she fled to Puerto Rico and appeared in court in Connecticut without the child, resulting in her arrest for "kidnapping and custodial interference charges."
PRVOTF members learned during an investigation that the child was residing in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico with the mother's boyfriend, U.S. Marshals said. They safely recovered the child who appeared to be healthy.
The Puerto Rico Department of Family Services then took custody of the child before returning them to their biological father, according to U.S. Marshals.
The U.S. Marshals Service, or USMS, said that anyone with tips on the whereabouts of a fugitive can contact the local office at 787-766-6297, call the U.S. Marshals Service Communication Center at 1-800-336-0102 or submit tips through the USMS Tips App.
