HARTFORD, Conn. — The Office of the Inspector General has released bodycam footage of an incident where a suspect was tased and then shot by officers Saturday night.
According to officials, at 8:15 p.m., Hartford police officers were called to a disturbance at 730 Maple Avenue. One of the people involved was reported to have displayed a firearm.
The man, later identified as Alexander Garay, 48, left the scene. Police officers saw and followed an SUV leaving the scene, which Garay was driving.
Police said Garay crashed his car at the intersection of Broad Street and West Preston Street. Officers approached the car and ordered Garay to show his hands. Garay ignored these commands.
A Taser deployment had no effect. When when one of the officers saw Garay in possession of a firearm, she ordered him to drop the weapon. When he failed to do so, she fired her weapon twice, striking Garay.
Hartford police administered medical aid to Garay who was taken to Hartford Hospital. At present, he is listed in critical but stable condition. Police recovered a loaded Taurus Arms 9mm pistol near Garay when he was removed from the car.
