NEWINGTON, Conn. — A Newington man is in critical condition after an early morning fire Monday.
At 02:41 a.m., police were called to Willard Avenue for a fire alarm in the building with an odor of smoke.
Fire crews found heavy smoke in the hall and coming from an apartment on the first floor. Officials said they forced open the unit with heavy smoke and and found smoke in the apartment from floor to ceiling.
Crews then worked on putting the fire out and searching for occupants. They found a man who was unconscious and he was taken from the building. The 76-year-old man was treated on scene and taken to an area hospital where he is in critical condition.
The fire was brought under control and extinguished in under 30 minutes. Mutual aid from Rocky Hill, Wethersfield, Berlin and Cromwell handled an additional fire alarm not related to this fire.
The origin and cause of the fire is under investigation by the Newington Fire Marshal’s Office and the CT State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit.
Anybody with information about the fire is asked to contact the Newington Fire Marshal’s Office at (860) 667-5910.
