MANCHESTER, Conn. — Two women were killed in a wrong-way crash after colliding with two trucks on I-84 in Manchester Saturday morning, Connecticut State Police said.
Based on preliminary information, troopers determined that the crash happened at 4:27 a.m. on I-84 eastbound near exit 62.
An Audi Q7 had been going the wrong direction in the right lane of three when it collided head-on with a FedEx tractor-trailer that was also traveling in the right lane, according to state police.
Following the initial crash, state police said that the Audi was pushed into the center lane and hit a second truck. The Audi then came to a final rest in the HOV lane along with the second truck.
The FedEx truck came to an uncontrolled stop across all three lanes, state police said.
The driver of the Audi, 44-year-old Brenda Mendrell of Hartford, and the front passenger, 44-year-old Jermyra Cortes of Hartford, were both found dead at the scene, according to state police.
The driver of the FedEx truck reported no injuries, and the driver of the other truck was taken to the hospital for minor injuries, state police said.
State police ask anyone with information or dashcam video regarding the crash to contact Trooper Michael Dean #416 of Troop H at 860-534-1098 or through email at michael.dean@ct.gov.
The Manchester Fire Department said that the Department of Environmental Protection (DEEP) was called to the scene for a report of a "significant fuel spill" while state police investigated and worked on accident reconstruction.
I-84 east in the area of 61 was closed throughout the morning with traffic being diverted off the highway and to route 291, according to the fire department. The highway was reopened Saturday afternoon.
