During October, pink is the primary color in Manchester

First responders are bringing their message about breast cancer awareness to the front lines.

MANCHESTER, Conn. — All month in October, first responders in Manchester are bringing their message about breast cancer awareness to the front lines.

For the first time, all of the first responders in Manchester are involved in a breast cancer awareness initiative. Assistant Chief Gordon MacMillan from the Manchester Fire Department spearheaded the mission to get as many first responders as possible involved in wearing pink.

Macmillan worked with the local firefighter’s union and also worked to design pink t-shirts.

“This is our first year doing it, it’s the fire department, it’s the police department and it’s the Ambulance Service of Manchester, so it’s a town wide event," Macmillan said.

Firefighters are wearing bright pink t-shirts, the police officers have stylish embossed pink badge patches, and the Ambulance Service of Manchester brought its message mobile.

Matt Tuttle, a paramedic supervisor at the Ambulance Service of Manchester, pulled into the lot at Fire Station 6 in Manchester with an EMS SUV bearing a brand new pink wrap.

“It’s new, we just did this a couple of days ago – you know for the month of October and for breast cancer awareness," Tuttle said. “This is one of our vehicles on the front lines so everyone can see it and be reminded about the reason for the month and why we are all here.”

Manchester Police Officer Jessica Kind took a group “pink picture” with firefighters, police officers and paramedics at Station 6.

“I think if you ask anybody, they know someone who has been affected by this disease and that’s what it is all about.” Kind said. “It’s about people at the end of the day and we want to be champions for the people and we want them to know we are willing to stand up for them.”
