NEW BRITAIN, Conn. β The New Britain mayor warned city residents Wednesday that "bricks are falling into the road" after a commercial building fire from Tuesday evening.
Fire Chief Raul Ortiz said that a call came in around 8 p.m. Tuesday about a fire on 59 High Street. Crews from the city's fire department, along with mutual aid, responded to put out the flames.
Firefighters worked to keep the second-alarm fire under control "through the night" and into Wednesday at the 3-story commercial building where aerospace manufacturer Polar Corp is located, across from the New Britain YMCA, city Mayor Erin Stewart said.
No injuries were reported and it is currently unknown how the fire started.
Stewart said on Facebook Wednesday that the stability of the building's structure was compromised and that Columbus Boulevard between High Street and Washington Street will be closed for "at least the next 48 hours" until an engineer can an assess its safety.
According to Stewart, the city is waiting on professionals to make a determination, but the building appears to be a total loss.
"Big thank you to our fire department for their tireless work through the night and into today to keep this under control," Stewart said.
Stewart said Tuesday that the fire would be difficult to control due to "the age of the building and type of businesses in it."
