ENFIELD, Conn. — A man suspected of stealing from a Big Y supermarket was arrested Tuesday after hitting a police cruiser with his car "multiple times" during a pursuit in Enfield, the town's police department said.
Officers received a report at 4:45 p.m. about a car that had been involved in a robbery and was spotted in the area of the Freshwater Commons Plaza, police said.
The driver of the car, identified by police as Steven Pinto, was seen by police driving away from the Big Y. According to police, officers determined that Pinto stole an item from within the store.
Pursuing Pinto onto Interstate 91 southbound, police said they used a tire deflation device in an attempt to stop the car.
While Pinto's car tires were deflating, he allegedly hit an Enfield police cruiser with his car "multiple times." He also appeared to be reaching underneath his passenger seat for what was later determined to be a large machete, police said.
Pinto was later stopped in the area of exit 42 along I-91 with the help of Connecticut State Police on multiple charges, including multiple failure to appear warrants, engaging police in a pursuit, illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle, criminal mischief, criminal attempt to assault an officer, reckless endangerment, and larceny in the 6th degree.
Pinto was scheduled to appear in court Wednesday, according to police.
