SIMSBURY, Conn. — Seventh and eighth-graders from the Henry James Middle School in Simsbury took their coursework to the golf course on Earth Day for the first-ever “First Green" event set up at Hop Meadow Country Club.
The program is put on by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America to bring hands-on learning opportunities by applying classroom knowledge in an outdoor environment.
Greg Kuhr, the science supervisor at Henry James Middle School, said, “today is all about connections. Golf courses aren’t always associated with Earth Day but you can see how when you manage a course you have to maintain the environment in order to promote healthy ecosystems.”
Priyanshu Anand, a seventh-grader at Henry James Middle School, added that the day, “it teaches us two things at once: It teaches about math, there’s a station that teaches us about math,” and said, “also learning science too.”
Around 330 middle school students were part of the "First Green" event and rotated through 10 different learning stations set up on the course.
Kuhr said, “We’ve got people talking about soil science, we’ve got them looking at different meters that measure moisture, we’ve got kids getting a chance to play around and chip and putt so it’s really interactive.”
Mark Murnane, the vice president of golf at Hop Meadow said, “[the students] are learning science, agriculture, math and there is a little golf thrown in today too.”
