SOUTH WINDSOR, Conn. — Connecticut is in store for an early summer heatwave that has state and local officials warning residents to prepare a family cooldown plan.
“We’re going to try to stay cool. We started here today. We’re going to hit up the lake tomorrow and my brother's pool the next day and that’s the plan,” said Anette Kinghorn of Ellington.
A big part of that plan will involve community splash pads. The concrete oases have been growing exponentially across Connecticut. There’s a popular new splash pad with many water features that just opened at Nevers Park in South Windsor.
“I love it. This is our first time here,” said Kinghorn.
Not far away in East Windsor, the town took the wraps off a new covered canopy playground that provides some shade in the sun.
Families flocked to the fun on the 80-degree day Monday knowing that for the rest of the week, the heat index will crack triple digits.
“Hide out in the A/C. Close all the curtains,” remarked Kelsey Ledden of South Windsor.
Ledden was sitting in her shade chair. She brought a tent for the kids and had a tip to avoid the scorching sun.
“Go out in the morning before the sun is at its peak or go out in the evening,” said Ledden.
