Stolen car suspect seriously injured after Southington rollover crash closes roads

A witness at the scene said they saw a second suspect run from the scene headed west on West Main Street, police said.

SOUTHINGTON, Conn. — A stolen car suspect was seriously injured Saturday after crashing into a utility pole and landing up against the Hop Haus building in Southington, police said.

Officers were alerted at 3:13 a.m. by the department's Flock surveillance cameras to a stolen car going north along Old Turnpike Road into Southington from Cheshire, according to police. Three minutes later, a second set of cameras detected the car two and a half miles away from the initial location along Main Street by Meriden Avenue.

The car was spotted two separate times within minutes, but officers had lost sight of the car due to it traveling at a high rate of speed, police said.

An officer in the area of Plantsville Center later saw the car hit a utility pole and sever it. Three transformers fell to the ground while the car rolled onto its side and rested against the Hop Haus gastropub on West Main Street, catching fire.

The Southington Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire. There was no damage to the building, police said.

One of the suspects inside the stolen car, a 17-year-old, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries by an AMR medical crew after approaching an officer and admitting that they had been involved in the crash, according to police.

A witness at the scene said they saw a second male juvenile run from the scene headed west on West Main Street, police said. Officers were unable to find the suspect.

Plantsville Center was closed as of 9 a.m. while the accident reconstruction team during the police investigation. The area of West Main Street between South Main Street and Summer Street is also expected to be closed for several hours while Eversource repairs the pole and the transformers.
