WEST HARTFORD, Conn. — Private snowplow driver John Mierzejewski was happy to be behind the wheel of his 40-year-old Dodge Ram pickup truck pushing snow once again.
“I’ve only been out two or three times this year, it’s been lean,” he said. But a winter punch all across Connecticut had Mierzejewski roaming the roads of West Hartford and working to keep the driveways of his customers in the clear. “It’s fun just to get out there and do your job,” he added.
Heading West on Route 44, the snowfall helped to raise business at Fatty’s Ski and Snowboard. The popular winter sports shop was expecting a boost due to more than seven inches of snow that fell in Canton.
Bruce Freedman, the longtime owner of Fatty’s said, “this is great, this is what we have been waiting for all year.” Freedman then said, “This (snowstorm) is a huge added bonus, it makes more people want to get up and go.”
In New Hartford, at Ski Sundown, owner Bob Switzgable estimated that close to 8 inches fell on the slopes there – and the skiers followed.
“This just what we needed,” said Switzgable, “it’s perfect.” Before getting on the lift, skier Andrew Virello, from Canton, said “it’s great to get fresh snow and not have to make it and this will probably carry us through another couple of weeks here.” Switzgable added, “It’s back to winter!”
